honor is spelled “time”
Honor is spelled “time”… but, really. I was reading in the New Testament and wanted to look more at what one of the words for honor means. When I looked up the Greek word, it was transliterated “time”. I know it’s not pronounced like our word time and I can’t imply definitions of one word to another in a different language, but it caused me to pause and look further. Strong’s defines “time” as:
a value, i.e. money paid, or (concretely and collectively) valuables; by analogy, esteem (especially of the highest degree), or the dignity itself:—honour, precious, price, some.
And it struck me how precious and valuable time is and therefore how honoring it is when we offer our time to others.
It’s common to hear people talk about having more time or less time… But it’s a funny thing to say if you think about it. We never actually have more time or less time. It is a fixed component of our lives as we know them. And an endless component after death. Time is a funny thing.
During quarantine right now, some of us feel like we have more time while some of us feel like we have less and it’s just slipping through our fingers. But really, we all have the same amount of time in our days right now. It’s one thing that truly equalizes us the world over.
The fixed hours in a day, precious because they happen only once, a gift we are honored with in turn to offer honor.
Who or what will we honor today? This moment in time…
